Colors and Patterns to Match Style and Mood

Colors and patterns take the expression of your personal style through clothing, to a completely new level. Certain colors signify mood, while patterns take it a step further. Colors and patterns of prints express individual moods and styles.

Polka Dots

The word polka by itself conjures up dancing, playful imagery. Brightly colored polka dots reveal whether you are playing to win, or playing around. The larger the polka dot, the bigger the image.

Red polka dots reveal an adventurous spirit while turquoise or blue-green polka dots radiate calm, cool collectivity.

Black polka dots on a white background suggest excitability mixed with energy, and white polka dots on a black background give off the same energy, times two.

Polka dots in bright orange signal a daring personality, while yellow polka dots show off the wearer’s imagination.

Stripes

Wearing vertical stripes can make one appear taller, while horizontal stripes can add width, and candy stripes are more subtle.

Paisley

The paisley pattern resembles different symbols. Whether kidney-shaped or twisted teardrops, or mangoes, some cultures used the paisley to decorate garments of royalty. In South America as well as in some Middle Eastern countries, weavers used the paisley design in jewelry, quilts, and rugs, as well as clothing.

Choosing the size and shape of a paisley pattern depends on the level of regality one wants to display. Mixing pastel and bright colors in a paisley pattern is an eye-catcher, and allows the choice of a wide array of colors to match with paisley.

The Ooh-La-La of the Layered Look

Wearing layers of clothing is essential for keeping warm when temperatures dip. The layered look in clothing is also fashionable and allows versatility. Use your imagination to put stylish layered looks together. Too much is never enough when you think about layers, at any time of year.

Casual Layered Look for spring

Wearing a solid colored lightweight shirt underneath a sleeveless print tunic or tank top is the perfect combination for shorts or Capri pants. Match the color of the pants or shorts with the first layer, and add shoes and a clutch bag with matching colors.

Layered Look for fall

Wear a solid color blazer or a soft cardigan over a long sleeve blouse, over long pants or a long skirt. Add jewelry to match the mood, whether you are heading to a breakfast meeting on a crisp autumn morning or going shopping in an outdoor mall. Break up the layered look with a belt. As the day gets warmer, you can remove the sweater or jacket to reveal a different layered look.

Warm Layers for winter

A turtleneck or long sleeved shirt topped off with an over-sized long wool sweater is a great way to layer for warmth. Complete the outfit with high boots over jeans or tights, and a busy print scarf for a warm layered outfit on cold winter days.

There are numerous options, no matter the occasion or weather. Even in the summer, belts and jewelry are excellent accessories for putting together a layered look.

Many of us can remember going to school in the 1960′s, when kids thought wearing mixed patterns was dorky. Today it is a new way to show off your unique style and it is making a comeback.

Turn to the Tunic

The word tunic comes from the Latin, for tunica, a lightweight jacket with or without sleeves, worn by both men and women in Ancient Rome, based on earlier Greek garments resembling jackets.

Ancient Romans wore tunics with or without stripes, in a wide range of lengths and widths, to indicate their status in society. Embellishments on tunics also designated status. The versatility of the tunic is still popular today, essentially because of the varying styles.
